The Martian Child is at another branch, and I have placed a request for it. Jumping Off The Planet is listed as being on the shelf here at Lakewood. After my lunch I will go back and see if I can find it

DG is not an easy person. I am always amazed at how annoying he can be and he has done a lot that I find it difficult to forgive. But he has been very kind to me over the years (did a graveside service for one of our sons which was absolutely beautiful--he earned a lot of brownie points with me for that; gave us one of our dogs, etc.)

I do enjoy his writing because he has such a warped sense of humor. For all the flak he took for being closeted, his expanded "Martian Child" was amazing--his "coming out" book.

I loved Bingo, too, it was the first of her books I ever read. I really, really adored Six of One, which was her first book about the Runnymeade gang.

Some years ago I picked up one of DG's books but could not get into it at all and made some really pissy comment. It's entirely possible, maybe even likely that my personal animosity clouded my perception. We do have most of his books at the lib. maybe I will check out the jumping off series if only for the voyeuristic thrill of seeing people I know ;)

(all that drama and emotion on S17 seems like another lifetime ago)

BTW, I saw your note on Ron's entry a few days back about Gerrold novels. You remember David from CIS, right? I've not only read almost all of David's novels, but I'm in 3 of them. Characters in his "Jumping off the Planet" set include Bev Sykes, Georgia Griffith and Olivia Partridge, to name a few!

I've read a few Rita Mae Brown books and none really did it for me. I haven't read any of her mystery books.

The item I find most difficult to get around in Rita Mae Brown's latest works are her rambling expositions (really; I know some of us might need to catch up with all the new characters, but does she have to use so many words to help us out?)

Yes, the soapboxing often overshadows the story, but I have to hand her props for at least making the effort to present her personal agenda with a semblance of an entertaining plot to hold our attention and educate us at the same time.

Oh, let me face facts: Bingo was my favorite Rita Mae Brown book and I hope she'll revisit that bunch of characters.
