I'll have to look for the first of those books. It sounds very reminiscent of the info provided by Flex Your Rights in BUSTED: The Citizen's Guide to Surviving Police Encounters - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqMjMPlXzdAMany people in the US are woefully ignorant of their rights and panic during encounters with law enforcement. Between human nature that leads many of us to want to seem helpful, and a lack of understanding of how we can toss away our rights by simply opening our mouths, many people end up in trouble that could have been easily avoided. As far as inprisonment: The prison system in this country is progressively becoming privatized. We have handed over the building and operation of our prisons to private corporations in the name of small government. We now have a situation where more people in prison equals more profits for the companies running the prisons. Looked at in this light, the mandatory sentencing laws make more sense. Much of the mandatory sentencing legislation is pushed by lobbyists for the private prison industry.http://www.sfbayview.com/2007013177/News/Commentary/A_report_on_today_s_prisons_and_jails_Part_2a.html Has a lot of info on that problem.
