Interesting review! I was not a big fan of Lost Boys, although I appreciate where you're coming from. I tend to think that Card hit something magical with Ender's Game, and his struggles to reclaim that have really taken their toll.

I found Lost Boys to be a little bit preachy - a lengthy novel about a community's discrimination against a Mormon family. Although undeniably evocative, I had a hard time mustering up any empathy given the author's own stance on other minority groups.

Card is a big hit in my home. I've mainly experienced him by reading to my boys, but I enjoyed it all (they are too cool to be read to, most of the time, now).I've been getting lots of referrals from your site on my fiction blog. Thanks for all the support. My recently-launched environmental site http://greenchemistry.wordpress.com/ has rapidly developed a larger readership than my lit blog (though still tiny!), and I've been neglecting my fiction reviews a bit as a result (I think you know all about being slave to multiple blogs!!). I have a big backlog of books to write about, but I'm struggling to finish the new books at present. A minor problem in the Grand Scheme.Best wishes, Jim

Excellent point, JD. I loved the Bean series too. Truly OSC has written too many to talk about in one blog post. I expect I will write about OSC again.

The best part of the Ender's Game is that it has become something truly unique. I don't know any other books that have spawned such VERY different series.Enders Game acts as the DNA for both the series that continues with Speaker for the Dead, and also with the Ender's Shadow books.I've known many people who went on from EG to Speaker and lost interest after Speaker because the books move into very cerebral/philosophical territory. When these people pick up Ender's Shadow (which is the story of Bean, Ender's chief lieutenant in the original book) they fall in love with Card's universe all over again.
