Sad to say our current budget and plans do not include buying a luxurious new home. But sometimes I indulge my dream of buying some wooded property south of here, along the road to Mt. Ranier and building Paul Bunyan’s house by checking out a few books about log homes, and The Log Home Book: Design Past & Present is great for gawking at utterly stunning homes built from logs.
Written by Cindy and Arthur Thiede, a couple with much experience in building, owning and writing about log homes, most of this coffee table sized volume is devoted to the eye candy of stunning architecture and interior decoration. There is a more technical section at the end that discusses in some detail the different methods and techniques of log home construction that may be of real use if you seriously contemplate building one of these homes and is easily ignored if you are just living vicariously through the pictures. Recommended.
How To Afford Your Own Log Home contains significantly less eye candy for the casual browser but a wealth of useful hard info for anyone seriously contemplating a log home construction or purchase. The author’s stated intention with writing the book is to tell you exactly everything you need to know to be your own general contractor on the construction of your log home in order to save 25% on the total cost of your new home. I doubt seriously I would feel ready to take on the responsibility of being my own GC just after reading this book, but would find it a very useful reference to have on hand when dealing with the GC I hired. Recommended for those seriously interested in pursuing a log home construction project.

Hi Alan,
Up until this point i’d only thought of log cabins, the kind you see in the mountains in the movies.
Looking at the picture on the cover of “The Log Home Book” just made me realize what i’d missed, that place is huge, must be a four or five bedroom.
I’d like to see more of these close up, they look like they would be fairly pricey, probably way out of my league.
