Some Posts Don't Get Written
The powers that be are conspiring to prevent me from posting today. I spent over an hour on a long post about Herb Boyd’s We Shall Overcome and Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s favorite words. My DSL failed at the moment I pressed publish and the post disppaered into the ether.
The DSL came back up after a bit and I wrote a new post about my problem with the disappearing post and how hard it is to write an article a second time when you have no access to your first draft. It wasn’t Really a book review but I did include all the links. Then I clicked publish, the connection failed and the computer ate my post. Again.
Clearly the powers that be do NOT want me to promote these two books today. Want to join me in thwarting them? Go over to Worldcat and order these books from your library, even though I have included NO links. Or type the titles in the Powell’s search box and buy the new Carle cuz it’s so cool and to show those powers that be that didn’t let me put a link for your to do so in this space.
The gods willing, The Thin Red Line will return to regular publication tomorrow.

Where is my catepillar!
Another habit I have acquired because of the frustration Sean describes is this: On blogs and forums, the last thing I do before I hit publish is to copy the text to the clipboard. Just takes a second and for those 1 in 50 times the sever burps at that exact moment, I have it right at hand to re-post.
The way I write, I have not a prayer of re-composing something if it gets lost. I am sort of stream of consciousness in a lot of what I write, and then right on to the next thing!
Nothing like making a long detailed response to a post on a forum, and then when you hit reply, it says “please login”. You back up and the post is gone. I have had it happen a few times to me in the past, but I normally stay short and sweet on responses now. I use “oh no” blogger for my blogs , and that saves your posts automatically.
Wow… nice tip, Will! Sorry to hear of your woes, Alan. I think we can ALL relate. It’s gotten to the point where I literally save every post I make in HTML version before doing anything else. That way, even if terr*rists b*mb G**gle before I switch to WordPress, I can still make the transition. lol
The other nice thing about BlogDesk is that once you upload a post, if you then make further changes with your WordPress tools, they are reflected back in your saved BlogDesk file on your own computer. The only time I can think of that this might be an issue is if you don’t regularly back up your WP database and something happens to one of your published posts. I remember reading on BlogCatalog about someone who had all the text after his “more” tag on all his posts disappear. If this had happened on a site using BlogDesk, then all the posts on the local machine would have been updated to reflect the missing text online.
Thanks for the tool tip, Will. I will definitely check it out. I only have this problem very occasionally but it is very frustrating.
Arrgg! That’s frustrating. I get upset when a comment I am making disappears. I use an off line tool to write. There are several, but the one I have been using is BlogDesk. I can just upload the post into WordPress when I am done. So far it works for me just fine. The only problem is that because it is so easy to start a draft and save it for later, I do and always have way too many posts half finished! Sort of like the way I read books….
