Well, if I am getting this right as the 3rd comment here I need to get the 9th, 10th, and 11th, sentence from the book closest at hand? OK, that would be the Oxford Essential Dictionary of Difficult Words, so I'll pretend I did not see that one and go one deeper into the pile. That gets me to a 1944 first edition of "Riddles in Mathematics" by Eugene P. Northrop. (This one even smells like a real book!)

"Achilles covers that distance in 1/10 second, and the tortoise is still 1/10 second ahead."
"And so on."
"Then the number of seconds which elapse before Achilles catches up with the tortoise is the sum of the infinite series: 10 plus 1 plus 1/10 plus 1/100 plus 1/1000 ...."

I had to add the words "plus" in place of the addition sign. Maybe JD can explain why when I type a "plus sign" in a comment it won't show up?

Yea, as much as I love that book, that except might not be the best suited to getting a feel for the book as a whole.

While I am here - from Slaughterhouse Five, the book closest to me:

(in the middle of a section of dialog)

"They had him doped up. He was sort of glassy-eyed."
"And they pinned a target to him?"
"A piece of paper." said Billy.
