Welcome To Your Brain, a Ron Review

Starting off the new week with a Ron Review, one of my partner Ron’s occasional takes on a book I probably would not have selected.

Welcome to Your Brain by Sandra Aamodt and Sam Wang is a witty and well written tour through the human brain. They explore modern myths such as that we only use 10% of our brains, (we actually use it all). They also refute the myth that Alcohol and Pot kill brain cells.   The authors cover the basic anatomy of the brain. How and why it does what it does and that occasionally it will lie to you in order to do what you need to do during the day.

They also cover the Senses and how our brains process the random input into info we can use. And the manipulations it does to fill in the gaps and make sense of what it processes. They also cover the changes the brain goes through in different stages of conciousness. What meditation does, and how we move through the cycles of sleep, and how sleep deficits affect us

They do all of this with a gift for making the most complex concepts seem very simple.  If you want to know all about how your brain works,(or occasionally doesn’t) and how it does what it does then this book is Highly Recommended.

  1. Lately I’ve been thinking about how the brain processes sound. Sometimes is takes me a few moments to understand what someone says. Presumably, my brain is getting the information, and, if it’s poor quality data, sending it for further brain processing before sending it on to the language center where that data is turned into actual information. Of course, it’s likely I’m completely wrong about that. Regardless, this sounds like an interesting read.

  2. Definitely looks like it could be an interesting title to have on hand for our homeschooling. Thanks for letting me know of it.
