If you are a blog author or a blog reader who writes about or reads about subjects such as business, economics, politics, social issues or any other field where folks break out cold, hard statistics to back up their positions, you really need to read this book. Joel Best, author of previous bestsellers Damned Lies and Statistics and More Damned Lies and Statistics, has written a very short, very readable guide to critically examining statistics we are presented with online and in the news media. Non math majors need Not stress. Best does an excellent job of explaining in plain and simple English what things you need to consider when evaluating a particular statistic and shows lots of actual published examples of statistics being used to paint a particular image quite opposite what an informed understanding of the actual statistic would Really Mean. Whether you use statistics in your own posts and arguments or merely have to confront them as you go through your day, Stat-Spotting will give you all the tools you need to effectively evaluate the statistics. Yes, it is very easy to get confused by the all the stats available. I did a maths course a few years back where we looked at how easy it was to twist stats to just about anyway you want to….. (Especially if you’re the government!) This is the sort of book I know I should read… but I’ll probably pick up a blood thirsty thriller instead!
