I haven't noticed any uptick in the books that I have read, but I have no idea what other books may be Like today. (stressing that my problem is with the style and emphases rather than the core subject matter). I see at the lib things like Twighlight, Stephanie Meyer's Young Adult novels about a teenage vampire but have no clue what they are like. I have Seen the DVD boxes for the Saw movies at the circulation desk, but other than the fact that they have a (relatively rare) Horror category sticker, it's not obvious from the box what the movies are about or like.

A question that interests me somewhat more is your remark about finding ARC's at Powells. I know for certain that in accepting the ARC from the publisher you specifically agree not to sell the printed and bound book or leak any of the plot or other contents prior to the publication date. But do you, or anyone know if the recipient of an ARC is allowed to sell it After the book has been published? Or after it's been remaindered? This has practical implications for future blog contests ;)

Have you noticed and uptick in the number of books that wallow in descriptions of pain? It seems like it could a trend we see in movies with the whole Torture Porn genre exemplified by the Saw movies.

I sometimes see ARCs on the shelves at Powells. It's like finding a small treasure. Which is pretty much the joy of Powells.
