Once before I wrote about one of my “once-in-a-lifetime dream trips (to the South Pacific) and today I have a book about another distant part of the planet that I would love to visit. Someday. And today’s post, my 350th by the way, features an absolutely, stunningly gorgeous book of words and photographs from The Aleutian Islands of Alaska. Subtitiled “living on the edge”, this extraordinary book by photographer Kenneth F Wilson depicts the native Unangax people, their history, their culture, their future and their incredibly beautiful chain of remote islands.
This volume would be ideal for an afternoon of Armchair Travel and is also highly recommended to anyone who is interested in Alaska’s Aleutian islands as well as to fans of The Deadliest Catch, the cable television show about the crab fishing industry that is filmed in Dutch Harbor and on the Berring Sea. Chances are I am never going to get around to having the time and the money to spend a summer touring these islands via the Alaska state ferry, which connects many of the islands to each other and to the Alskan mainland. If you don’t expect to get around to this one either, do yourself a big favor and check out this book. It’s an extraordinary and beautiful part of the world that is well worth visiting, even if only via a great book. The Aleutian Islands of Alaska: Living on the Edge– Highly Recommended.
