Today I am pleased and proud to swap guest reviews with Sarah Sammis whose Puss Reboots blog is one of my favorite sources for children’s book reviews.     Please visit her site today to read my review of the juvenile fiction title Can You Spell Revolution? by Matt Beam.

Mouse’s First Fall is the seventh book in the series of Mouse’s First books by Lauren Thompson. Each book in the series uses a time of the year to teach key concepts to young children as Minke, Mouse’s older sister teaches her brother as they play.

Buket Erdogan‘s colorful acrylic illustrations bring to life the wonderment Mouse feels at experiencing a windy day during fall. The different leaves are done in vibrant reds, oranges and yellows against a stark blue sky with lighter wisps of blue to show the wind whipping through the air. Minke and Mouse are tiny compared to the huge trees and their falling leaves giving a good sense of scale that will feel familiar to small children learning to live in an adult sized world.

Minke introduces Mouse to the different types of leaves that one sees in fall. He learns about different colors, shapes and sizes. Teachers or parents can use the book as a starting point for teaching sorting and scientific classification of trees by leaf type. For more ideas on lessons from the book, see Suite 101.

The entire series includes:

  • Mouse’s First Christmas (1999)
  • Mouse’s First Halloween (2000)
  • Mouse’s First Valentine (2002)
  • Mouse’s First Day of School (2003)
  • Mouse’s First Summer (2004)
  • Mouse’s First Spring (2005)
  • Mouse’s First Fall (2005)
  • Mouse’s First Snow (2005)

  1. This review was fun to do. I just stocked up on more books from the library for future reviews. :)

  2. Thanks so much for swapping reviews with me today, Sarah. I had a lot of fun with it too. (and i currently have 60 books checked out from the library and a handful of review copies. I start a lot more books than I finish and may look at several similar titles before deciding to review One of them)
