Book Review: Get Cooking by Molly Katzen

get cooking katzenHaving grown up in New Orleans and somehow learned to cook by osmosis,  it is sometimes hard for me to relate to grown-ups who don’t know their way around the kitchen.    But if you did not learn to cook as a child at her mother’s hand and are tired of take-out,  vegetarian cookbook guru Molly Katzen’s latest cookbook was written with you in mind.    Katzen,  a founder of the iconic Moosewood Restaurant in Ithaca, New York was the author of The Moosewood Cookbook which first brought Katzen and vegetarian cooking to prominence way back in 1977 and has gone on to write a number of other cookbooks including The Enchanted Broccoli Forest and Eat, Drink and Weigh Less which combined diet and health advice along with recipes.

While Katzen definitely remains a big vegetable lover,  Get Cooking contains recipes for both vegetarians and carnivores and includes such staples as Meatballs and Spaghetti and burgers as well as a some somewhat more exotic dishes like Beef Broccoli and Spaghetti Carbonara and comfort food classics like Baked Macaroni and Cheese.    There is also a full chapter of vegetarian recipes like Greek-style Stuffed Eggplant and Mushroom Popover Pie as well as a chapter full of rich, luscious desserts including Cherry Clafoutis and a chocolate and peanut butter candy cookie that sounds utterly divine.      If you don’t know how to cook but would like to learn,  Get Cooking is Highly Recommended.

  1. Hi Alan! I was cooking from some recipes of her’s that I got from a friend in the mid 70′s before The Moosewood Cookbook was published. I bought both that one and the EBF as soon as they came out. I did not know about this one. Just added it to my cart at Amazon.

Love to read your reviews even though I don’t comment as I should. Hope you have a great Holiday!
