Book Review : Soon I Will Be Invicible by Austin Grossman
Soon I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman is basically a graphic novel written in prose form. And it’s a good one. I have admitted in the past to being in my fifties and still reading comic books/graphic novels, so it shouldn’t surprise anyone that I’d like this, a more mature, more psychological view of the usual hero vs villain battle. Mr Grossman’s protagonist is Doctor Impossible, the fourth most dangerous man in the world, who’s tried and failed 12 times to conquer the world. His story starts with him incarcerated and under intense supervision/scrutiny. He escapes when a pair of superheroes come to interrogate him about the disappearance of his arch nemesis, Core Fire.Which he knows nothing about nor had anything to do with. Their inexperience causes them to lower their guard, which he then more than takes advantage of.
Dr Impossible goes into to hiding while also starting his next plan for world conquest. And he also wants to seek revenge on those who’ve persecuted him over the years. The heroes who’ve stopped him in the past. The story follows him mostly from his point of view, though it also follows a woman named Fatale, who’s the newest member of the World’s Greatest SuperTeam. Her struggle to adjust to the team and her new team mates as well as to make sense of her new world . She only remembers her past before her transformation into a cyborg warrior, and doesn’t know how or why she ended up this way. She’s got a major surprise in store for her about who made her and why.
The book goes into a fairly deep psychological study of this man, Dr Impossible, who’s convinced that he’s evil because he has an IQ over 300. And feels all along he was just a super intelligent loner who got no respect and had become isolated from humanity. But was still persecuted by all around him. Including the College quarterback who ends up in the same accident as Dr Impossible where they both gain their powers. And still end up bitter rivals.
This book is a fun examination of a superhero universe from an unusual angle, and is surprising in it’s depth.
